Kids' Candy Supports the Troops

On November 2, 2010, Chatsworth Family Dentistry hosted our first annual Halloween Candy Buy event.  The Halloween Candy Buy Back program serves a two fold purpose.  Extra candy is removed out of the house that no one needs for so many reasons and then goes to treat the troops in the Middle East who are in harm's way.  Often times the candy is given to children in these areas to build trust.

By donating their candy to soldiers, children can learn about giving back while cutting back on excessive sugar intake.  Each year more children are becoming obese. So much so that many are calling it an epidemic.  In fact, according to the National Center for Health Statistics, 15% of school aged children are overweight. A simple step like reducing sugar intake is an easy way to prevent cavities and help curb the obesity epidemic.

The being our first year we didn't quite know what to expect but we had a great turn out.  We even had several families bring in cards, pictures and letters for the troops.  It was a joy to see the kids come in, hand over their candy, receive their month and leave with a big smile on their face.  A special Thank-You goes to the local schools for allowing us to pass out flyers to the kids.  We also want to say congratulations to Coker and Spring Place elementary schools who tied in having the highest student participation.

Every year the Halloween Candy Buy Back program receives more and more support from across the country.  Last year 122,000 pounds of candy was collected.  We are looking forward to next year.  It is our hope to grow this into a larger event with more businesses participating.  Dr. Downey spent time serving the United States Air Force on a pararescue base.  He says it gave him a firsthand look at how the little things from home can make such a big difference for soldiers while away from their loved ones.  We are very proud to be able to help our community and to give back a little to the troops.
